My sister Janine is trying to get into baseball, so I've been sending her emails every day describing and explaining the greatness that is America's National Pastime.

Today I went over what single means.

A single is when a baseball player hits the ball and safely makes it to first base.

i.e. Derek Jeter hits a single to right field!

An RBI (run batted in) single is describes when a player hits the ball and safely makes it to first base, and a runner on base scores.

i.e. Derek Jeter hits a single to right field...and Johnny Damon scores! RBI single by Jeter! The Yankees take the lead over the Red Sox, 532-1.

Single is also a term to describe lonely middle aged women.

i.e. Condoleeza Rice is not only an accomplished politician and doctor, she is also a single.

I have to admit, I must apologize for the ridiculousness of the previous examples. There's no way the Red Sox are gonna score 1 run against the Yankees this year.
