Entourage is another show that is relentlessly stupid, but in a good way. It's not a show that can or should be taken seriously in anyway, but there's nothing wrong with that. On it's face, it's just a show about douchebags who hug way too much. At it's core, it's just a show about douchebags who hug way too much. Seriously, those motherfuckers hug way too much.
Strangely though, for a show that, on it's face, is completely shallow, it's one of the shows on TV with an amazing attention to detail and respect for past events, the latest example being that the head of Warners that Vince/Ari pissed off three seasons ago is back in the mix just when Vince needs a comeback film to revitalize his career, and the events that lead up to Ari getting offered the job as the head of Warner Bros. The writers, led by Doug Elin, have a clear vision for where they want to take the story from season to season: The Rise and Fall and Redemption of Vincent Chase.
The storytelling isn't that great though. It goes through stages when the show seems like it's going to get really interesting, but then miraculously everything turns out all right in the end. The perfect example was last night's season finale, which was everything that's so great and terrible about Entourage. We saw for the first time that Vince actually cares and worries about his career, when we saw for the first time that Eric, Drama, and Turtle might start to branch out from the shadow of Vince, and what life would be like if they weren't the biggest stars in the world. Then in the last five minutes Vince gets the job of a lifetime, so Eric goes back to being Vince's lackey without any hesitation, and Turtle and Drama act like they have nothing going on for them but hugging Vince every chance they can get.
Still, it may be the most underrated overrated show out there. It's the Colin Farrell of televison.
