Yankee Stadium

The first time I went to a Yankee game was in 1999, on Joe DiMaggio Day. It's really cliche (speaking of which, the phrase "it's really cliche" is really cliche, no?), but I had the same reaction that many others had "Wow, that field is really green". I remember they were playing the Blue Jays, but I don't remember who won. It really wasn't that long ago, but stuff like that makes me feel old.

The last Yankee game I’ll ever go to at Yankee Stadium is on Sunday. It will be the last game I, or anyone else, will be able to go to at the old Yankee Stadium. I won’t say how much the tickets cost me, but I will say that I am probably going to be really hungry over the next week and a half or so. I also decided to go to the Giants game before hand, so unless I go to the Super Bowl or kidnap Michael Phelps and drop him into a shark tank, this Sunday will be the most epic sports day of my lifetime.

I paid a lot of money, but Yankee Stadium only closes once, and for whatever reason, I’ve always had the strong urge to live through history. And Yankee Stadium closing is the most historic moment that could happen this year, including Barack Obama possibly becoming the first person of color to be elected as President of the United States or Sarah Palin possibly becoming the first woman to serve as Vice President or John McCain possibly becoming the first zombie to win the White House.

Anyway, I’m excited to just soak it all in. Chanting “De-rek Je-ter”, singing along to Enter Sandman, wondering how A-Rod may be the first person to be completely awesome and suck so much at the same time, seeing the Stadium come alive one last time.

It’s an exciting time. It’s like having a rock concert at a funeral.
