The last time the Yankees didn't make the playoffs, I was in 4th grade.
They're in last place now, and it's still really early and the Yanks always had a knack for getting hot and reeling off winning streaks in late July and August, but this year feels different. For the first time in a long time, I don't have the feeling like "We're gonna win it all this year." It's tough to get used to, but for the first time in over a decade, the Yankees are a team in transition. They could still make the playoffs this year, and if Joba turns out to be the Ace sooner than expected, a Wang-Chamberlain combo in the postseason would be really great to see. But I just watch the team and it feels like they're too old and too young at the same time. It hasn't felt that way since the early/mid-90s when Stump and then Showalter were the managers and Donnie Baseball was on his last legs.
It'll all come together eventually for the Yankees, because it always seems to, whether it's this year or next year. And it's weird to think that the last time the Yankees missed the playoffs, I was excited about playing Mortal Kombat and hoping that I wouldn't get detention. The Giants and Knicks have basically reversed roles over the last 15 years, but the Yankees have stayed the constant. I could always count on them to be good even though my other teams probably weren't.
